A Bière de Garde ("beer for keeping") is a strong pale ale or keeping beer, traditionally brewed in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. These beers were originally brewed in farmhouses (they are known as Farmhouse ales) during the winter and spring, to avoid unpredictable problems with the yeast during the summertime. Le Mort Vivant was originally brewed by Souther Star Brewing. They halted production in 2013. Being our Brew Chief’s favorite beer Southern Star graciously gave the recipe and rights to our brewmaster so that Brigadoon could brew the beer once a year to brew it just for her. In 2018 while visiting Brigadoon they realized their error and with our permission began production again in 2019.
